VALLEJO, Calif. – The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) announces its 49th Annual Special Olympics, a tradition highlighting the athletic achievements and inclusion of students with extensive support needs. This anticipated event is set for Friday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Corbus Field (840 Nebraska St.).

Each year, VCUSD’s Special Olympics brings together students from TK through age 22, representing schools across the district.

The event showcases the athletes’ determination and celebrates courage, sportsmanship, and community values. The Special Olympics Motto—“Let me win, If I cannot win, Let me be brave in the attempt”—will be the day’s guiding inspiration.

“Each year, our Special Olympics demonstrates the heart and unity of Vallejo,” Superintendent Rubén Aurelio said. “Our students inspire us with their perseverance and joy, and the support of our staff and partners makes this event truly special.”

Those who make the event possible each year echo this sense of unity.

Angie Garcia, a VCUSD occupational therapist and annual coordinator of the event, shared, “Coordinating this event is a highlight of my year. Our community's collaboration and our students' determination make the day unforgettable. I’m grateful for every volunteer and partner who helps make this celebration possible.”

VCUSD’s new executive director of special education, Kristen Hardy, also emphasizes the spirit of the day:

“I am truly excited to see our students shine as athletes and witness our community come together to support their achievements. The Special Olympics is a celebration of determination, courage, inclusion, and sportsmanship—and a reminder of the power of belonging for every student. Watching our students’ excitement is genuinely heartwarming. Thank you to our dedicated staff,  transportation department, and community partners for making this inspiring event possible.”
